More Traffic to Your Website

You can have a great website, but people need to be able to find it.

There are many different strategies for bringing traffic to your website. No one strategy can guarantee results. Conventional advertising is certainly one option, and it should be considered as a part of your overall strategy. However, the purpose of this page is to tell you a little bit about getting more traffic using on-line techniques as a part of your overall strategy.

Search engines are the primary way most people find something on the Internet.
Some of the most popular search engines are:
Google, AltaVista, Excite, Hotbot, InfoSeek, Lycos, WebCrawler, Yahoo, Bing and MSN.

Google is by far the most important search engine. I recommend focusing your effort on becoming visible on Google, as roughly 60% of all searches are done from Google. The rest will take care of themselves, if you are visible on Google.

Search engines find your website through several different techniques:

Meta-Tags:
Creating meta-tags takes some of your time and your web designer’s time to create, but, other than that, they are free, and easy to create. Once in place, they will gradually help search engines to find you, and bring traffic to your site. However, it generally takes a few weeks to see results, and you may not find yourself very high up in the listing order.

Putting your search terms in the text of your page:
Basically, search engines don't entirely trust meta-tags. They rank you higher when they see actually content on the page that supports what you put in the meta-tags. If your home page does not contain the right text, we can re-engineer it to be more search engine friendly. If design, aesthetics, or use of Flash graphics prevents us from having the right text on the home page, another technique is to include a small paragraph below the footer with appropriate text - visible to your users, but primary there to help search engine rankings.

Registration:
Registering your site with search engines is another possible step. You can do this yourself, or you can pay a submission service to do it for you. I am not a big fan of this approach, as making your site more attractive to search engines is a much more effective long-term solution.

Pay per Click Advertising:
"Pay per Click" services are the ones that put the paid advertising links at the top of search engine results. They can be a cost effective way to promote your website, as you only pay for the people who actually visit your site. Your position among the paid advertisers is determined by a bidding process, with "per click" costs ranging from 10 cents to as much as $2.00. It is very important to choose the search term you bid on carefully, as you do not want to pay for visitors who aren’t actually interested in the services you offer. An effective "pay per click" campaign will cost $50 per month and up.
