What is a Blog?

Blog is an abbreviation of “web log”.  A blog is a special kind of website that allows it’s owner to easily post updates to the website, such as daily news, diary entries, announcements, schedules, or any other communications.  Posts to the website can include images. So the owner of the website can add content on a regular basis without the help of a web designer/webmaster.

Blogs also allow the website users to comment on what they see on the website. The owner of the website is notified by email when a comment is sent by a user.  The owner can then approve or reject the comment as to whether it is to added to the website.

Blogs are rapidly gaining popularity on the Internet.  They offer both the owner and the user a much more interactive experience.

Blog software automatically manages the stream of updates and comments.  It files posts by category and by date, and provides archives to all posts, either by category or date.  It also has built in search capability allowing users to find specific content in all posts.

A blog website constructed on a blog software package called WordPress.  Wordpress is built around templates called “themes”.  Building a custom theme from scratch is rather complicated and time consuming, but there are many free themes available and most can be modified somewhat to meet the needs of a specific website.  For example, this site was constucted using a free theme called Regulus, designed by Binary Moon.  We modified it several ways to get exactly the look we wanted.
